The active ingredient in senna is called sennoside. This component molecule is converted by microorganisms in the colon into another substance, rhein anthrone, which has a beneficial effect to stimulate colon activity (it accelerates bowel movement and improves digestion) and increases fluid secretion. The laxative effect of sennoside and its active metabolite rhein anthrone are thought to inhibit the absorption of water and electrolyte in the large intestine, thereby increasing the volume and pressure of the intestinal contents.
