Main Active ingredients of Boswellia Serrata Extract™

The chemical composition contains 60 to 70% of resin, 27 to 35% of gum, and 3 to 8% of volatile oil. The main components of the resin are 33% free α and β-boswellic acid, 1.5% combined boswellic acid, and 33% boswellic resin hydrocarbon. The gum is 20% of the calcium salt and magnesium salt of arabinic acid, and 6% of astragalus adhesive; in addition, it still contains 0.5% of bitterness. The volatile oil is light yellow, aromatic, contains pinene, racemic-limonene and α, β-phellandrene, and its main aromatic components are unknown.

Characters: Dry gum resin, mostly in the form of small papillae, teardrop-shaped particles or irregular small pieces, 0.5 to 3 cm long, sometimes adhered into clumps. Light yellow, often with slight green, blue or brownish red, translucent. There is a layer of white dust on the surface, after removing the dust, the surface is still dull. The texture is crisp, wax-like in section, matte, and a few of them are glass-like luster. Slightly aromatic, slightly bitter taste. When chewed, it breaks into small pieces at first, and then softens into gel pieces immediately, sticking to the teeth, and the saliva becomes milky and slightly spicy. It becomes soft when exposed to heat, has a slight aroma (but there should be no rosin), emits black smoke, and leaves a black residue. Study with a small amount of water to form a white emulsion. It is preferably light yellow, granular, translucent, free of sandstone bark impurities, powder sticky, and fragrant.


Study Shows:

Boswellia serrata extract and curcumin increase GDF15 production by human primary osteoarthritis chondrocytes: a new mechanism of action.

Results: No mortality was observed at the tested concentrations. BSE and curcumin both decreased concentration-dependently NO2 and IL-6 production, and increased GDF15 production. For NO2 production, the decrease was observed from 0.2 μg/ml of curcumin and 10 μg/ml of BSE. For IL-6 production, the decrease was observed from 1 μg/ml for curcumin and 10 μg/ml for BSE. For GDF-15, the increase was observed from 2 μg/ml for curcumin and 50 μg/ml for BSE. Maximal effect was observed at 4 μg/ml for curcumin: -67% NO2 (p<0.0001), -71% IL-6 (p=0.0001) and +80% GDF15 (p<0.0001) and at 100 μg/ml for BSE: -40% NO2 (p=0.0003), -70% IL-6 (p=0.0003) and +73% for GDF15 (p=0.0017).
